75 Years of Police Helping Police

During the early months of 1935, a handful of Metropolitan Police officers gathered in the Traffic Division roll call room at 462 Indiana Avenue N.W. to discuss organizing a credit union in order to help their fellow officers through the hard times of the depression years. The basic idea of the credit union was originally, and still is, to provide a safe place to save their money and at the same time give those who have a need, a place to borrow money at a fair rate. Their informal meetings and planning came to fruition on Friday, August 30, 1935, as a charter was granted by the D.C. government in the name of Police Credit Union. At 4:30 P.M. the same day, the first official meeting of the Police Credit Union was conducted, and by the second meeting, which was held on September 21st, the credit union had already grown to 177 members.

Over the past seventy-five years, sticking with that basic credit union idea, Police Federal Credit Union has continued to steadily grow into a full service financial institution with assets of over $150 million. We utilize those assets to provide a full range of services - from mortgages, vehicle and personal loans, to investment options, savings and checking accounts, to our 11,600 plus membership - the law enforcement community of the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and their families.

The long standing value of Police Federal Credit Union has not only been recognized by the membership, but also by the National Credit Union Administration. In 2007, Police Federal Credit Union was granted a membership expansion charter to serve beyond the Metropolitan DC Police Department, to include those serving in federal, state, local, county, and municipal law enforcement in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

As a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative, we continue to serve our members with lower loan rates and higher deposit rates than those available at commercial banks, meeting the same fundamental need that began in that small traffic division roll call room seventy-five years ago.

Please join us as we celebrate 75 years of history; safeguarding members’ deposits, improving their lives, and saving them money.

In addition to missing out on the services and benefits we offer, the credit union may charge a $5.00/month fee for inactivity after 6 months of no share, draft or loan activity. Your account is considered dormant if you have not made a deposit or withdrawal within the past three years. At that time you will get a reminder of the dormancy. Let Us Help You Save for Retirement
IRA options from Police FCU (back to top)

If you’re saving for your future (and we hope you are), we are here to assist you. Take a look at the four No Annual Fee IRA options offered by your Credit Union.

Traditional IRA- A great option for creating a balanced, long-term savings plan with tax deferred earnings and possible tax-deductible contributions.

Roth IRA- More flexibility in the use of your investment. Not tax deductible; however, qualified distributions are tax-free. Consult your tax advisor about maximizing this option.

SEP- Simplified Employee Pension – Retirement accounts which allow employers to make tax-deductible contributions on behalf of eligible employees. Employees do not pay tax on these contributions, but distributions are taxed- subject to many traditional IRA rules.

Coverdell Education Savings Accounts- formerly known as the Education IRA, can be used to pay for qualified elementary and secondary education expenses (tuition, fees, books, other supplies, and in some cases, even room and board).

Contributions are not tax-deductible; however, a Coverdell ESA offers the potential for tax-free withdrawals if used to pay qualified education expenses.

When you open an IRA account, be sure to make regular contributions to it to get the maximum benefit. For more information, we encourage you to visit the IRA page on our website or contact us, we’re here for you. Rollover options are also available.
